Reading Tom Peter’s book on the circle of innovation and he makes a lot of good points and gives plenty of good career advice. There’s no more loyalty and lifelong servitude to the huge conglomerates. It’s everyone and their own self-development, the ability to adapt and regain new skills, and the ability to create worth to the company and to ownself. It is both selfish and survival.

 

Anyway, when I let the point sink in, the concern is how the engineering and technical workforce are going to adapt. The white-collars themselves are too firmly entrenched, let alone the blue-collar labourers. What the country needs is a transformation, a point of focus, an innovation-led perspective on value creation and the independence and liberation to move forward at our own initiative, at a pace and speed not seen before. Let go of the deep-seated resentment felt at the favouritism towards the private sector shown throughout the Mahathir years, but to move forward there needs to be a close working model for development and forward moving.

Alhamdulillah- I'm fasting today. Hopefully insyaAllah the precursor to a mindset change and a more disciplined approah to life and its challenges.

One thing to note. Why is it when I'm free from angst I have nothing to share? This shud be the occasion to develop new thots and after deliberation, think through and share with others. It's what you want to happen. Not waiting for people to go to you. Learn what you want. Do what you think is right. Don't easily let go your visceral vicissitudes. (Is that the right usage?) Oh yeah- stop fretting.

Being reflective is necessary- it provides a basis for changing deep-rooted poor attitudes, beginning with preparing mentally- similar to an NLP approach. Tho better if conducted nightly as espoused by the sunnah when we perform qiyam.

One outcome of my reflection today is how I need to raise my self-confidence.

Sometimes I question why I go thru so much soul searching and soulbaring- it's too agonising, painful at times. But I do know the answer to that is I have not found my footing, or rather found it but let go of it unwittingly, and find it so much harder to find and to grasp as fixatedly as before.

What I do know what I need to now is to determine my role models, the icons to emulate, the firmness of character I need to develop, the strength to hold on, the people I need to surround myself with, the 'ecology' I need to develop and sustain around me, the discipline to implement and of course, the blessings of those that count. And the learnings from before is simple, no actions happen without Allah's Will and His Blessings alone will determine the success of this next assault to ensure I obtain the conquest of my soul and my base desires.

And just on cue, the ustaz here is saying, "mantapkan diri dulu sebelum perjuangan" as a sunnah of the prophet.

quality is the overriding concern.. to push or to pull?

EF made quite a few good points. The concern is not about usage of VC or PE funding schemes, which obviously is useful to overcome the current funding gaps, but the focus on deliberately and consciously excluding commodity-based industries from the tech focus. So, by taking out O&G and agri from the focus, the innovation is expected to come from other industries.

 

Key question if this is to be overcome – what are the indicators of our dependence on these commodity-based sectors. And what are the justifications for putting them back on the radar of the tech focus?

 

Qualitatively, obviously innovation has to occur within a domain, definitely not in a vacuum, as the timing of an innovation has to occur to overcome the current deficiency of a system. Now, that’s a key angle in terms of defining the market space.

 

A second angle is from the supply-side – looking at the broad infrastructure being put in place, there seems to be strong government support, better perhaps in intention than in execution, there is a basis for an existing strong regulatory system, creation of clusters and academic support, though taking all these in tandem it can still be considered relatively nascent. The key weakness at least now from my perspective, although it still has to be justified and strengthened is the quality of the human capital. The key issue at stake here is not the quantity but the quality of the development work.

 

At the heart of the consideration of the development stages being put in place is how best to nurture quality?

 

Can I start to examine that in terms of close working relations between industry and academia – how many of the current problems faced by the industry is actually being resolved by the academia? Or are they two separate parallel tracks?

Wrote this about 2 weeks back, and just uploading it now. Firstly, cos I would like the blog to reflect thinking other than the current pre-occupation with outside-in thinking, and secondly, cos this issue has been allowed to drag on for far too long. To the detriment of everyone, and not least the rakyat.

1. DSAI has gone overboard in his quest to gain power – smearing the reputation of the DPM in reaction to the nonsensical allegations of SBA, an irrelevant pawn unfortunately dragged into a high-stakes political situation he could not have imagined emerging. But again by upping-the-ante, the response DSAI has chosen, has also shown how poorly the country is managed when the situation is allowed to drift into a crisis which erodes confidence in the main democratic institutions of the country.
2. How best to emerge? Again, politics is about doing the impossible – and the impossible is getting the protagonists to sit down and stay cool. Difficult when everyone has grand designs, - AAB, DSAI, DSNR, TDM, MY, LGE, LKS – and none actually involves the betterment of the living standards of the rakyat.
3. It is a situation ripe for the leadership of PAS to display the professionalism required to maintain order and stability. Numerous examples from the age of fitan during the leadership change of Uthman to Ali, and Ali to Muawiyah are testaments to how the transformation of a deeply polarized society to the stability and the progress of a budding empire.

Just read the translation of surah yusuf, in a way the SWF or GIH being similar to the role of being the guardian of the storehouse, Khazaa 'inil ardh. So it is an amanah- and not to be underestimated with.



Each decision has to be tested against some very stringent conditions, justifications must be accompanied with accurate evidences 'alaa basiratin- and the maqasid upheld as much as it should.



To do that, my own personal constitution and conviction must be beyond reproach. The fullest use of auditrail for all decision making, the tranparency of thought, the clarity of arguments, the quantification of context must be established.
